Project Gratitude

Segregation of Facebook Posts

Project Gratitude : Day 1 - September 25, 2014
So Deepa Iyer has nominated me for 7 day Project Gratitude, wherein you put up two things you are grateful for and two nominations.
There are a lot many things for which I am deeply grateful and indebted to so many people. Few of them can never be said or understood , few are past telling and few have been paid in kind. To make a list is tough , but here is an attempt.
In chronologically order of acquaintance
1. Thank you Mom - No explanations needed here. Even the great Gods needed mothers when they chose to come to Earth, what more can a mere mortal say.
2. Thank you Dad - Again why waste words trying to explain the in-explainable. I'll be blessed if I can become at least tenth of a person you are.
Rest for tomorrow.
I would like to nominate Naveen K Vijayan and Anirban Chakraborty to put in their list.

Project Gratitude : Day 2 - September 26, 2014
The two people I would like to tell my thanks would be :
My Grandmother (Mom's Mom) - For being my support and guide during my formative years. The childhood I spent with you are some of the best times I ever had in my life. Though not a story telling granny , she was God's gift to gourmands and to little monsters with big mouths and bigger bellies.
My Paternal uncle Anujan Nambidi, who is no more with us. A tutor by profession, he was my first teacher, and I've never met another teacher like him till date. By a mere gesture and a ready story he can turn the bulliest of the bullies into attentive pupils , and the way he can imprint concepts into your mind without you even realizing was pure magic. I am still searching for words to re-tell his stories the way he said them. He taught me that the root cause of all our fears is just ignorance and it was his influence that seeded the Eternal curiosity about things unknown in me,
It was the combined power of these two doyens turned the hurricane gale force that was me into a manageable book munching human kid.
I now request Nick 'Che' Ameer and Sinoy John V to put in their lists

Project Gratitude : Day 3 & 4 - September 28, 2014
Couldn't post one yesterday so combining the list for two days.
The first set of people I would like to say thanks today are all those I am fortunate enough to count as friends. Thanks each and everyone of you for accepting me as a friend , for helping and guiding me through different phases of my life. Without you I would not have been where and what I am today. You guys make this life worth living.
Next I would like to express my gratitude to my dear brothers and sisters, my dear aunts and uncles and all the other sweet members of our extended family. I deeply cherish all the great fun filled family reunions we had every time and always look forward to coming back to them.
I am nominating Nisha Chechi and Harish to put in their project gratitude list. Idea is simple, It's a 7 day Project, wherein you put up two things you are grateful for and two nominations for each day

Project Gratitude : Day 5 & 6 - September 30, 2014 .
Once again I'm forced to combine two days as yesterday I did not get enough time to update my status. So here is my list for the day
I'd like to start off by thanking all my teachers, classmates and seniors right from the my first school - the Nandipulam Church Pallikkoodam ( Less trouble to Mom  ) , then Don Bosco Pudukkad (KG to 4th Std), Holy Angels Boys High School Ollur (5th -6th) , Hari Sri Vidya Nidhi School Punkunnam (7th-12th), Combined College Thrissur (Engineering Entrance Examination Coaching), and finally Government Engineering College Thrissur (B.Tech) . It's from them that I learned the first lessons of life, the difference of existing and living and the joy of sharing and giving. Thank you each one of you for invaluable lessons that contributed immensely to my character and growth as an individual.
Next I must thank each and every person I've met , interacted and worked with at the following work places in my brief career so far - My first work place at Jet Airways (I) Ltd, to Wipro Mumbai and Delhi and now Ramco Systems. I've had the privilege of working with some of the best minds of the Aviation and IT industry whose work ethics, commitment and professionalism has been inspirational and same time inimitable. Thank you all for accepting me, grooming me and enriching my professional experience.
Please understand that I'm consciously steering clear of mentioning any names here because once I start mentioning names, there is not a single name I can leave out from my acquaintance list except mine. Such is my indebtedness to each one of you because everyone of you reading this has touched my life in one way or the other making it better in someway real, imaginable or unimaginable and I'm grateful that it has been so.
I'm nominating my dear friend Tomy AC ( whom I know from my KG classes) and Jino Jayaram for this 7 day Project Gratitude. Each day please put up two things that you are grateful for along with two nominations (only if you feel like and u can!!!)

Project Gratitude : Day 7 - October 2, 2014
This project was indeed a challenging exercise, did ask for some soulful introspection and thus all the more fun to do . Deepa Ma'm - Thank you once again for nominating me for this. This idea is so lofty and a task so vast that this small attempt that I've made is indeed meager.
It's humanely impossible , at least in my case, to express my gratitude to each and every person for all the things I am grateful for , known or unknown. Hence let me thank God , that which for me personifies the finest of all human faculties - the capacity to love unconditionally and the selfless acts of kindness. Every moment I live on this earth is a blessing I cherish and for that I'm grateful to God. Since this kindness is a in-exhaustive resource given freely irrespective of gratitude expressed or not, I will not sully it anymore with hollow words.
Finally let me thank my dear wife Anju Vinod for putting up with my eccentricities and suffering me - a thing which she has gladly accepted for a life term . Hats off to your courage girl, love you for letting me be me
So that ends the Project for me and so my final nominations for this would be Renjith Rajan and Anupama Jagan. Be sporting guys and do this exercise .. It's fun once you make up your mind. So put in your 2 things for which you're grateful for , for next 7 days with 2 nominations .

Bhagvad Gita - What I Learnt (Continuation)

[Continuation of the previous post here]

The purpose of Bhagavad Gita is to provide an ethical orientation to the Vedic thought . It bridges theory with practise, metaphysics with ethics, contemplation with action making them complete and meaningful. Gita thus lays foundation to knowledge and its application.

Task in front of the originator of Bhagavad Gita, immaterial of whether it's divine or not, was so enormous - expounding the ethical implications in the absolute metaphysics of Vedic thoughts - a task that needed erudition to utmost degree. But it's curious to note that the authority of Vedas are neither been negated ,challenged or accepted in toto by the Bhagavad Gita.

Bhagavad Gita delineates that material happiness should not be made the summum bonum of life. Actions must be performed with out any expectation attached to its result. The sense of duty prescribed in Gita, is not barren like the Kantian doctrine "Duty for Duty's sake".

Its pointed out many a times that without any motive there cannot spring any action, and Gita does not by any means repudiate this psychological fact. In fact the motive Gita enunciates is much more powerful but which is neither intelligible nor a worthwhile vocation for any average empiricists and those who according to Plato, lead the life of senses.

A person seeking perfection must necessarily develop an equanimous attitude. The equanimity and apathy towards worldly possessions, actions and more over on their results are a psychological result of the attention on things beyond the world of senses. For a person seeking perfection both moral and intellectual , it is the higher realizations that matter, which goes beyond any worldly riches or power. Gita

According to the Bhagavad Gita, even if one falter is the pursuit of divine purpose the act will not be devoid of any moral value. (Any act towards Self-Completeness is moral) and thus on this philosophy Bhagavad Gita reconciles the secular or semi spiritual goal of human welfare with the purely spiritual goal of Moksha.

Gita therefore while accepting the Vedic Cult of pursuing worldly happiness by propitiating to Gods, exhorts each of its readers to rise above sensual involvements , that gives nothing but a fleeting or momentary illusion of happiness and proceed on the path of selfless action, ultimately reaching limitless joy.

Bhagavad Gita for me, is therefore essentially a philosophy of action.

Shadow Wars

Large populous of this world, the majority who are sane, who lead normal lives, who go about minding their own businesses are in reality neither pious nor evil. They are never completely in the subservient black domain of eternal darkness or in the self-effacing, eternally pure domain of light. But all of them have in their souls, deep shades of grey. The great Ones, the High Overlord of Darkness and the Brother of Eternal Light, therefore preys on these chained souls.

Normal people are all always born with varying degrees of light and darkness straining their will and thus each one is a potential warrior of darkness or a harbinger of light. Each of these minds are thus precious targets for the minions of great Ones, who will then try to bend them for their masters, using them as pawns in the eternal struggle of dark and light to dominate. These wars, slowly devour the very essence of their victim's life and no matter whether it's the evil or the goodness that ultimately roots in, both would, like an unchecked cancerous growth, spread wild, ultimately killing the free spirit of its host, making it forever a zombie servant of the great Ones.

In response to the unrelenting chaos that light and dark created in the mortal world there emerged in the world a new creation that was neither dark nor light, but beings of Shadow. Formed with a core of darkness eternally bound in a thin frame of light, a shadow by its nature was equally at home in light and dark. A shadow's presence is always there in the world, even where light shine in its brightest form, it hides right under the very feet, and it takes shape even in the greatest of the great darkness when a careless speck of light accidently flashed on it or when one of its nooks turns a shade deeper. For the Shadow becomes strong when both light and dark are strong and it thus became the greatest force that stemmed the great Ones might, holding them off from destroying the world.

These shadow forces were scourge of the land, forged by it to fight tirelessly hard and to bring down forever the lofty towers of the brother hood of light and eternally seal the hellish dukedom pits of darkness.

I am never alone

Cold was the feeling, A creeping chill of the moon less night
Dread and exhaustion, was all that was of me
A shell of a human , empty of heart and soul
Life's all but a mirage lingering desolately for miles ahead.

The road I am on, found no end, So many twists, turns and forks
When ever a brief respite of end was sought, it curved another bend

Tired and senseless I walk along,
Deep within, my heart numb and hollow
Winding and turning I trudge on, So many lanes join and split
Not knowing where , what and which lay ahead.

Standing at a fork on this path of misery, I am suddenly scared and all alone
Tears of sorrow streak my face, as I shudder a look ahead
Heaviness of a long lost hope lay curdling in my brain
I struggle to put one foot behind the other, A traveler lost on the ways of the World.

A gentle hand lay sweet upon my shoulder,
Not knowing who, I feel hope
I turn to see but feel with my heart
A brief but soothing breeze, an outstretched arm with a helping hand.........

I thank you God,  for the day you touched me,
And now I smile each time I look upon my way
The road has warmed and all my sorrows are tamed
Within my heart , I now know,  Your friendship and love will always remain.

So be the next bend I travel frightening and new,
I will walk without pain or sorrow
Now that I am at last at peace with my hope
Your Love shines forth on my way, Sure lost I'll never be again

A cheer of warmth holds me now, an embrace of life sweet and warm
I walk steady by the beats my heart,
Breaths as light a fluttering feather
Not before, but knowing this now, On all my roads , I am never alone

You may learn countless scriptures and study thousands of theologies, You may do countless Yajnas and holy sacrifices and make offerings to Gods, You may be an atheist and go about doing your daily duties or Karma, You may be an ardent believer and do your daily prayers and worships ,But until and unless you understand and realize that God (Brahman or the omnipresent and omnipotent) and You (Atman or soul) are one and the same, You will never ever attain salvation or freedom from worldly existence (Jeevanmukti or Moksha) even if you try for lifetimes of a hundred Brahmas (*1) ( Creator of life)

(*1) The basic unit of Vedic cyclical time is the day of Brahma,(Creator of Universe) which lasts 4.32 billion years. The day of Brahma (also called a kalpa) is followed by a night of Brahma, also lasting 4.32 billion years. The cycle of days and nights of Brahma toes on for Brahma's lifetime of one hundred years (36,000 nights), equivalent to 311.04 trillion of our human years. During the day of Brahma, life, including human life manifest.s During the night of Brahma, life is not manifest.

The Yuga Cycles

Each yuga cycle is composed of 4 yugas. The first, the Satya-yuga, lasts 4800 years of the devas (demigods) The second, the Treta-yuga, lasts 3600 years of the devas. The third, the Dvapara-yuga, lasts 2400 years of the devas. And the fourth, Kali-yuga, lasts 1200 years of the devas . Since a deva-year is equivalent to 360 human or earth years, the lengths of the yugas in earth years are, acording to standard Vaishnava commentaries, 432,000 years for the Kali-yuga, 864,000 years for the Dvapara-yuga, 1,296,000 years for the Treta-yuga, and 1,728,000 years for the Satya-yuga.

This gives a total of 4,320,000 years for the entire yuga cycle. One thousand of such cycles, lasting 4,320,000 years, comprises one day of Brahma, (the Creator in the Hindu Holy trinity ) whose job is to create this visible and invisible universe and all its dead and alive. inhabitants A day of Brahma is also called a kalpa. Each of Brahma's nights lasts a similar period of time. Life is only manifest on earth during the day of Brahma. With the onset of Brahma's night, the entire universe is devastated and plunged into darkness. When another day of Brahma begins, life again becomes manifest.

Each day of Brahma is divided into 14 manvantara periods, each one lasting 71 yuga cycles. Preceding the first and following each manvantara period is a juncture (sandhya) the length of a Satya-yuga (1,728,000 years). Typically, each manvantara period ends with a partial devastation. According to Puranic accounts, we are now in the twenty-eighth yuga cycle of the seventh manvantara period of the present day of Brahma.

Altogether, 453 yuga cycles have elapsed since this day of Brahma began. Each yuga cycle involves a progression from a golden age of peace and spiritual progress to a final age of violence and spiritual degradation."

from the Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 3, Chapter 11

This would give the inhabited earth an age of about 2 billion years. Interestingly enough, the oldest undisputed organisms recognized by paleontologists - algae fossils like those from the Gunflint formation in Canada - are just about that old.

That grand old ‘Vishwakarmalaya” stands head strong, baring its time hardened stony blocks to the elements challenging the mightiest – TIME stands still here head bowed- life still meanders out of its many noisy corridors and time worn steps - down with the same passion and vigor- Along its many corners memory freeze frames to the those old scenes . Those sounds … the smell of fresh “kaavi” paint … chalk powder flowing out from classes... Many a soft whispers making out along the footsteps and tree shades of the ground... the ever inviting ambience remains the same but the “sattwa” is gone. The life flows out on and on...With its unrelenting and sometimes cruel pace “the greatest of the conjurers” draws out schemes after schemes, making and marring destinies ,drawing people far and near, away and close….

O mighty Time I plead to thee,
Please bring me back those days , the days of my lost summer
That being the never separated bell and chime,
That being the ever parted sun and shade
That being the ever alluring scent of yesterday that refuses to die
That being the unsaid, the unheard sweet agony that lingers on
That being the smiling tears, wetting the deep downs of memory
That being the never fading portrait, etched out along the annals of memory
Just give me that splinter of light trickling along the slight window crack
Just once and for once only and I stand waiting
Like “Ram” who was never to be lost in Sarayu,
Like “Sita” who’d never ever forget panchavadi

A Hindu's Views on Hinduism

For one to be a true Hindu he needs to know what Hinduism stands for and according to me it is choice and freedom to practise a belief system of one's own.

We can find a lot of aspects in Hindu ways of life that are contradictory as well as utterly negative and derogatory to popular beliefs. Frequently in scriptures we can find Gods coming in as characters that exhibit all flavours of human tendencies and emotions and many of their actions put to test the very belief of the followers. But again we must consider that Hinduism, unlike any other religion is not organized, hierarchical or structured. It is neither strict nor hard in its beliefs and forms rather a way of living than a religion.

What we must understand is that being a very very flexible religion Hinduism permits a lot of different thoughts and interpretations of its rules and regulations along with the very nature of it's Deities. A lot of literature that may come across as blasphemy is tolerated and even promoted so that people can discuss and relate wordily life with spiritual life. Ultimate aim of Hinduism being the union of man and god or God Realization, it gives a lot of paths for that depending upon the status of mind of each follower. All philosophies are right depending on the level of spiritual growth one has obtained. This is very well elucidated in Bhagvad Gita.

A true Hindu never questions other's faiths and never degrades anyone on the basis of their beliefs . One must discuss , assimilate facts and then think upon it and find out what is right for one , but then one must also make allowance to other's right to be like that too. What is right for one may not be right for other and Hinduism advocates and accepts it unlike many other religions. Other religions have a strict hierarchy and well defined right/wrong concepts which makes them uneasy with the freedom of Hinduism. They are baffled with the outright contradictions in Hindu scriptures and thus cannot digest the facts behind them.

Hinduism provides all but a freedom of choice.. The freedom to choose from a lot of its many scriptural paths, a path of your liking to satisfy your needs and reach the God/Place which you want to ultimately.

Hinduism as a belief system does not advocate what to do and what not - it merely points out the various scenarios and the results and urge the follower to make a choice" An intelligent choice" as there are more than enough instances and examples of each action and its reaction in its multitude of scriptures and literature.

3 Questions

The most important questions that comes up in life are :-

Q1) Which is the perfect time to act ?

The most perfect time to act is NOW!!-- The Present Moment. Why?? Because it's only now that we have any power to act. We cannot predict what will happen in the next moment, but can very well do what we should do, right now!!. Time that's gone is gone for ever and what that will come is a mystery, Only this moment is under our control. .

Q2) Who are the most important people in life?

The most important people in your life are People who are with us right now. As explained earlier we have no control over the past (Which is gone forever) or over the future moment, but can act only in the present moment. So the people whom we are with, are the most important people for us for the present, as we don't have any idea of knowing whether we will meet anyone else or who will remain with us in future.

Q3) What must be most important action?

The most important action is To do good to the people whom we are with. As this being the most important time and whom we are with right now are the most important people, the most important action for us is to do good to them in whatever possible way we can and must. Again we don't know what will happen in next moment, who will be with us then and what results our actions bring, So the Best action for now is to do GOOD , in whatever manner we can, to all those who are with us right now. Doing good is an excellent insurance for future, as by doing so, we can be sure that we have not offended anyone and most importantly there is no guilty feeling.

Bhagvad Gita - What I Learnt

Life is a process of a series of experiences which are mysteriously and inextricably connected with the entire universe in all its planes of existence - Thus when Bhagvad Gita offers solutions to the problems of life and prescribes method of regulating and harmonizing its modes it has to take into account every thing in the universe to which life is related – The greatness of Gita lies in its integrality of its scope the universality of its teachings the all comprehensiveness of its doctrine.
The primary cause of trouble in which man finds himself is the erroneous notion which he has about his relations with the body, the world and virtually with God. The perishable nature of body and the world, and the immortal nature of the conscious soul within are forgotten – Truth and Falsehood of life comes into light when the events and facts are analyzed with pure reason unbiased with objects of sense-perception.
Man cannot cease action. Action is the law of individual life. To act, and not allow the reason to get attached to acts is the essence of Karma yoga. Cessation from physical action is not non-action. Vital, emotional, mental and intellectual action is real action. Through out his life, Man has no freedom to abstain from actions. According to Gita action law or Karma Yoga is action based on the consciousness of the absoluteness of God, the surrender of oneself to God.
The sense of possession is the greatest of deluding factors in human life. Bhagvad Gita talks about this as follows

What ever that had happened, happened for good
What ever that is happening, is happening for good
What ever that is going to happen is also for good
Why worry about anything that you lost,
For nothing in this world was brought by you when you came in here
And nothing will be taken back by you when you leave this world

Whatever riches you claim to be your own today was some one else’s yesterday
And it will be some one else’s tomorrow for sure.

So don’t worry about all this but live your life according to the law of Karma.
The Bhagvad Gita may be called “anasakti –Yoga” – The Yoga of non-attachment.
[Actions as Devotion to God, God as supreme, Free form attachment to the fruits of one’s action and equal apathy towards other beings – Marks of one who will reach the final destination – i.e. Brahma sakshathkaram ]
The emotional spirit of the Bhagvad Gita’s teaching, is the continuous consciousness of Absolute while the routine duties of life are discharged without reluctance and with joy of the knowledge of the fact that entire activity of universe is an overflow of the process of divine consciousness
The agent, the goal, the instrument and the process of action is Brahman. Essence of Gita’s ethical philosophy is based on “isavasya Upanishad” where the doctrine of “Nishkama Karma” has been suggested.

The purpose of human life is the recognition of the divine and Gita describes a number of ways and their relative merits, so that each reader is presented freedom of choice – A knowledge powered and intelligent choice..

FAITH ..Thats all everyone has

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and.....
Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Prof : Is God good?
Student: Sure.Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student : Yes.
Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?
(Student is silent.)
Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Is Satan good?
Student : No.
Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From...God...
Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Prof: So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)
Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Prof: So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)
Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.
Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.
Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn't.(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't goany further after that. There is no such thing as cold . Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence ofheat . We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy . Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, brightlight, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?
Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen theProfessor's brain?(The class breaks out into laughter.)
Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.
Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
